Prospero
The rightful Duke of Milan, now living in exile on a remote island. A powerful magician, scholar and father, Prospero seeks justice for past wrongs while carefully orchestrating events around him. Commanding, intelligent and complex, he is both a loving parent and a formidable force.
Miranda
Prospero’s daughter, who has grown up isolated from the outside world. Curious, compassionate and innocent, Miranda views humanity with wonder and optimism. Her journey is one of discovery, love and independence.
Ariel
A magical spirit who serves Prospero. Quick-witted, graceful and otherworldly, Ariel uses music, illusion and magic to carry out Prospero’s commands. Beneath the loyalty lies a strong desire for freedom.
Caliban
The island’s original inhabitant. Fiercely attached to his home, Caliban is resentful, passionate and deeply misunderstood. He combines moments of menace, humour and surprising poetic insight.
Ferdinand
The Prince of Naples. Honourable, romantic and determined, Ferdinand is separated from his companions by a storm and finds himself facing unexpected challenges. He embodies youthful courage and sincerity.
The Court of Naples and Milan
Alonso
The King of Naples. A powerful ruler burdened by grief, regret and responsibility. Alonso’s journey forces him to confront the consequences of past actions and reconsider what truly matters.
Sebastian
Alonso’s brother. Sharp-tongued, cynical and ambitious, Sebastian is often willing to place personal advantage above loyalty. A character who balances wit with darker motivations.
Antonio
Prospero’s brother and the current Duke of Milan. Ruthless, politically astute and unrepentant, Antonio’s actions set many of the play’s events in motion. He represents ambition unchecked by conscience.
Gonzalo
An honest and loyal counsellor to the King of Naples. Warm-hearted, optimistic and wise, Gonzalo provides humour, hope and humanity throughout the story.
Adrian
A member of the King’s court. Courteous and observant, Adrian often acts as a calm voice among the stranded nobles.
Francisco
Another nobleman in Alonso’s retinue. Thoughtful and sympathetic, Francisco offers reassurance and kindness during difficult circumstances.
Comic Roles
Trinculo
The King’s jester. Comic, colourful and opportunistic, Trinculo provides much of the play’s humour through misunderstandings, cowardice and clever wordplay.
Stephano
Alonso’s butler. Fond of drink, self-important and larger than life, Stephano dreams far beyond his station. A comic role with plenty of energy and personality.
The Ship’s Company
Master of the Ship
An experienced sailor responsible for keeping the vessel afloat during the storm. Practical, authoritative and unafraid to challenge noble status when lives are at stake.
Boatswain
A skilled seaman directing the crew through the tempest. Efficient, confident and direct, the Boatswain provides some of the play’s most memorable demonstrations of professionalism under pressure.
Mariners
The sailors aboard the King’s ship. They help create the urgency and excitement of the opening storm and establish the peril facing the travellers.
